Mechanical Design Engineer – Hybrid

Location: Derbyshire
Rate: £40 per hour (Umbrella/Ltd – Outside IR35)
Contract: 3 – 6 month initial contract – likely to extend
Immediate Start

Our client is looking for an experienced professional to take a lead role in managing the full design process—from initial concept through to final delivery. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact projects within a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment. You'll use tools like CAD and advanced engineering software to validate calculations, support testing, and oversee project execution, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction at every stage.

What Our Client is Looking For:

A hands-on background in fabrication and structural engineering
Proficiency in engineering calculations – using Mathcad, Excel, and hand calculations
Expertise in acoustics, airflow, and thermal systems
Experience with both large and small companies, showcasing adaptability
Strong ability in structural stress calculations and understanding of mechanical systems specifications
Key Responsibilities:

Interpret complex client specifications and develop concept mechanical designs using Inventor
Perform and validate calculations for structural loadings, ducting, airflow, and offshore environmental forces (pitch, roll, heave)
Lead engineering analysis for cost and weight reduction, and improve design for manufacture
Liaise with multiple teams, supporting and reviewing engineering work
Engage in and lead technical design reviews
Requirements:

Solid Mechanical Engineering background with a proven track record in heavy/large-scale structural fabrication
Proficient in Mathcad and hand calculations
Experience using Inventor or similar 3D modelling software e.g. Solidworks
Strong grasp of acoustic, thermal, and airflow engineering principles
Client-focused with excellent technical judgement and team collaboration skills
Engineering qualification
