SC cleared data engineer jobs: how security clearance works in 2026

SC cleared data engineer jobs are growing fast. Here's what Security Check clearance involves, how sponsorship works and how to get in.

SC cleared data engineer jobs are one of the fastest growing corners of UK data work right now. Government programmes, public services and national security work all need people who can build pipelines around sensitive data, and they need those people to be vetted. If you have ever scrolled past an advert because it said "active SC essential", this guide explains what that means, how clearance actually works and how to put yourself in the running.

What is an SC cleared data engineer?

An SC cleared data engineer is a data engineer who holds Security Check (SC) clearance, the UK government vetting level for people who need regular access to information classified SECRET. The engineering is the same work you already know: ingestion, modelling, orchestration, cloud platforms. The difference is the data, and the environment you handle it in.

According to GOV.UK, SC is for posts that need long-term, frequent and uncontrolled access to SECRET assets, or occasional supervised access to TOP SECRET assets. The live adverts below show what that looks like for data teams: government programmes, public sector identity systems and national security work, often delivered through consultancies and contractors.

How much demand is there for SC cleared roles?

Demand has risen sharply over the past year. ITJobsWatch, which tracks UK IT job adverts, shows:

  • 4,285 permanent jobs in England citing SC Cleared in the six months to 15 October 2026, up from 1,779 in the same period of 2025.

  • A median permanent salary of £70,000 for those roles, up 20.69% on £58,000 a year earlier.

  • 7,687 contract jobs in England citing SC Cleared in the six months to 6 October 2026, up from 4,035 a year before, with a median day rate of £549 (from £527).

  • Data Engineer is the tenth most common job title among permanent SC Cleared ads, with 190 vacancies, and appears in 351 of the contract ads.

In a year, permanent ads citing SC have more than doubled and contract ads have nearly doubled. That is a market moving in one direction.

What SC cleared data engineer jobs look like on the board

Here is a snapshot of live clearance-related roles on Data Engineering Jobs this week:

  • Data Engineer (RAG and retrieval), SC cleared: a two year contract on a UK government programme in central London, listed at £500 to £1,000 a day outside IR35 (the advert notes the rate is still to be confirmed). The stack mixes Python, Spark, Airflow or Dagster and Kafka with vector databases and retrieval for AI.

  • Senior Scala Data Engineer with CBSbutler: a six month hybrid contract in London at £530 to £580 a day inside IR35, supporting fraud detection and data integrity, with Scala, SQL and AWS.

  • IAM Data Architect, SC cleared with CBSbutler in Leeds: up to £590 a day inside IR35 on an identity and access management programme running to August 2027.

  • DV Cleared Data Engineer with Experis in Bath: £400 to £500 a day on a 12 month contract supporting government programmes. This one asks for candidates who are willing and eligible to go through DV clearance, rather than already holding it.

Notice the range. Some of this work is classic warehousing and integration, some of it is cutting-edge AI retrieval. Clearance sits on top of the skills you already have rather than replacing them.

Can you apply for SC clearance yourself?

No. This is the part that confuses people most. GOV.UK is clear that you need a sponsor, usually an HR officer or company security controller, to start the process. Contractors and consultants are sponsored by the organisation that owns the clearance requirement.

It also means the clearance is not really yours to carry around. In GOV.UK's words: "Security clearance is not owned by you as an individual." Your sponsoring authority owns it, which is why adverts often ask for "active" or "transferable" SC.

So the realistic routes in are:

  1. Join an employer that sponsors. Because the employer or client starts the process, the way in is a role that is willing to vet you. Look for adverts that say "eligible for SC" or "willing to undergo clearance".

  2. Take a role with lower vetting first. Some public sector roles only ask for the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), which is also the first stage of SC. A BPSS role can put you in front of teams that later sponsor SC.

  3. Make your clearance visible once you have it. Many adverts, like the ones above, ask for active or transferable SC, so state your status clearly on your CV and profile.

What does the SC process involve?

GOV.UK lists the checks behind an SC clearance:

  • The Baseline Personnel Security Standard (identity, right to work, employment history, unspent convictions).

  • A security questionnaire you complete yourself.

  • Departmental or company records checks.

  • Criminal record checks, spent and unspent.

  • A credit and financial history check.

  • A Security Service records check.

  • Possibly an interview, if questions remain unresolved.

There is no fixed timescale. GOV.UK says every application is different, and interviews, where needed, usually last about three hours. It also advises that you don't leave your current job until your sponsor confirms clearance has been granted. That is sensible advice for anyone weighing up an offer.

Once granted, SC is formally reviewed after 10 years, or after seven years for some contractors.

Skills that sit alongside clearance

Clearance gets you through the door, but the engineering still has to be strong. Across SC Cleared adverts on ITJobsWatch, Kubernetes, Docker and Microsoft technologies come up often, and 700 of the permanent SC ads also mention DV clearance, the level above SC. From the live roles above, employers are asking for:

  • Python, SQL and data modelling as the core.

  • Orchestration with Airflow, Dagster or NiFi, and processing with Spark.

  • Cloud experience on AWS, Azure or GCP, often in secure environments.

  • Data governance, security and information assurance.

  • Increasingly, AI skills such as retrieval, vector search and evaluation.

People rarely move just for the rate on the advert. With cleared work, the pull is often the purpose of the project and the length of the contract. If that appeals to you, say so in your CV and covering note. Explain why the mission matters to you, not just that you can tick the clearance box.

How to get started this week

  1. Set up a job alert for "SC cleared" and "eligible for SC" so you see sponsoring roles as soon as they go live.

  2. Upload your CV with your clearance status in the first few lines: active, lapsed, eligible, or BPSS.

  3. Create an account so you can save roles and apply quickly when a two year government contract appears.

  4. Browse current data engineering jobs and look for public sector and secure-environment work.

FAQ

Do I need SC clearance to work as a data engineer in government?

Not always. Some roles only need BPSS, and some employers sponsor SC for new hires. Roles that touch SECRET data will need SC, and many adverts ask for it to be active already.

How long does SC clearance take?

GOV.UK does not give a fixed timescale and says every application is different. Delays can come from checks with other agencies or slow return of documents, so reply to any requests quickly.

Can I get SC clearance without a job offer?

No. You need a sponsor, usually your employer's HR or security controller, and the clearance is owned by the sponsoring authority rather than by you.

How much do SC cleared data engineers earn?

ITJobsWatch shows a median of £70,000 for permanent SC Cleared roles in England and a median contract rate of £549 a day in the six months to October 2026. Live data engineering roles on the board range from £400 to £1,000 a day.

What is the difference between SC and DV?

SC covers regular access to SECRET information. Developed Vetting (DV) is the higher level, for posts that need frequent and uncontrolled access to TOP SECRET assets.

Find your next cleared data role

Cleared data engineering is busy, well paid and full of long, meaningful programmes. Whether you already hold SC or want an employer to sponsor you, the best move is to be visible.
