Based: Charlotte Street, London (W1) (Hybrid: 2-3 days in office)

About Route:

Route delivers world-class audience measurement for out-of-home advertising across Great Britain. Our data provides advertisers with precise metrics on not just who is exposed to their campaigns, but who sees them. We\'ve pioneered a world-first by delivering audience numbers for every advertisement broadcast on posters and screens throughout Great Britain.

We are currently in an exciting methodological development phase of building new data models, updated collection methods, and inputs. These advancements will enhance our understanding of how people move around Great Britain and which out-of-home advertisements they see.

Route is a small, highly experienced team and we are looking for a key individual to expand our technical skillset.

What we are looking for:

This is an exciting, unique opportunity to work with a close-knit team within the advertising industry.

The primary function of the role is to design and maintain reliable data pipelines to support our analytical work. However, this is not a traditional data engineering role; you will be expected to wear multiple hats and contribute across the entire data lifecycle and infrastructure stack. Solid Linux/Unix skills are essential, particularly on the networking and server configuration side given that we have our own in-house server. The successful candidate will also have familiarity with basic DevOps concepts, and an understanding of dashboarding and analytical tools.

Everything we do at Route revolves around human behaviour. As such, it is preferable that you too, are human. Ideally, you will also be smart, inquisitive and keen to get things done. You will be part of a small highly collaborative team reporting to and working closely with the CIO, the role will also require you to support the insight team.

Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position and candidates must be fully eligible to work in the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Data Quality Assurance: Perform quality assurance and validation checks on our release data sets
  • Automation: Automate all routine data checks, data loading processes, and reporting workflows
  • Data Insights & Tooling: Build internal tools and analytical solutions to extract and surface valuable insights from our proprietary data
  • Reporting & Analysis: Provide direct data analysis to support the insight team, as well as handling customer queries and producing scheduled data extracts and reports
  • Data Visualisation: Create and maintain effective end-to-end data dashboards and visualisations for internal and external consumption
  • Infrastructure & DevOps Support: Apply basic DevOps concepts to maintain services and work across our server and cloud platforms, including contributing to networking solutions
Skill Set
  • Programming & Pipelines: Proven experience building robust ETL/ELT pipelines using any major programming language, with a strong preference for Python
  • Databases & SQL: Extensive experience working with databases, SQL, and data warehouses. Familiarity with Postgres and BigQuery required.
  • Data Ingestion: Experience ingesting and processing data from diverse sources (databases, data warehouses, and external APIs)
  • Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC): Hands-on experience with an IaC solution, such as Terraform
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience: Minimum 2+ years of commercial experience in a relevant role
Nice to have / Highly Desirable
  • Cloud & Server: Experience working with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Virtualisation: Familiarity with type-1 hypervisors (Proxmox, XCP-ng)
  • Networking: Experience with Linux networking, with an understanding of firewalls, switches, vLANs, DNS servers
  • Best Practices: Knowledge of software engineering best practices across the development lifecycle, including agile methodologies, code reviews, source management (with Git) and testing
  • Independence: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Benefits
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays and Christmas to New Year break
  • Hybrid working (2-3 days in office) with flexible remote options

Where to Advertise Data Engineering Jobs in the UK (2026 Guide)

Where to advertise data engineering jobs UK in 2026: the specialist boards and channels that reach Spark, dbt, Snowflake and platform engineering talent. Data engineers occupy a distinct discipline that sits between software engineering, data science and cloud infrastructure — and the strongest candidates identify firmly with the data engineering community rather than with adjacent roles. General job boards consistently conflate data engineering with data analysis, data science and BI development, producing high application volumes but low candidate quality for specialist pipeline and platform roles. This guide, published by DataEngineeringJobs.co.uk, covers where to advertise data engineering roles in the UK in 2026, how the main platforms compare, what employers should expect to pay, and what the data says about hiring across different role types.

Data Engineering Jobs UK 2026: What to Expect Over the Next 3 Years

Data Engineering Jobs UK 2026: roles, salaries and the trends shaping UK data engineering hiring over the next three years — Spark, dbt, lakehouse and AI. Data engineering has become one of the most strategically important disciplines in the entire technology sector — and one of the most reliably in-demand. Every organisation that wants to use data to make decisions, train AI models, personalise products, manage risk, or understand its customers depends on data engineers to build the infrastructure that makes any of that possible. Without well-designed, reliable data pipelines, the most sophisticated machine learning model is worthless and the most ambitious analytics strategy is undeliverable. That foundational importance has made data engineering hiring remarkably resilient through the technology market corrections of the past few years. Where headcount reductions fell heavily on some engineering disciplines, demand for data engineers held firm — because the work of building and maintaining data infrastructure cannot be deferred in the way that some product development can. The data keeps coming. The pipelines need to work. But the data engineering jobs market of 2026 is not simply a stable version of what it was three years ago. The discipline has undergone a series of architectural shifts — from batch to streaming, from on-premise data warehouses to cloud-native lakehouses, from hand-rolled pipelines to declarative transformation frameworks, and most recently toward AI-augmented data engineering workflows that are beginning to reshape what the role looks like in practice. The employers hiring data engineers today are asking for a meaningfully different skill set than those hiring three years ago. The candidates who will thrive over the next three years are those who understand where the discipline is heading — which architectural patterns are becoming standard, which technologies are defining the modern data stack, and how the definition of a data engineering career is evolving toward a richer intersection of infrastructure, analytics, and AI enablement. This article breaks down what the UK data engineering jobs market is likely to look like through to 2028 — covering the titles emerging right now, the technologies driving employer demand, the skills that will matter most, and how to position your career ahead of the curve.
