Ready to shape the future of data?
Matillion is the intelligent data integration platform.
We're changing how the world works with data – and we need driven, curious people who think big and move fast.
We built the Data Productivity Cloud to supercharge data productivity, and now we’re shaping the future of data engineering with Maia – our AI-powered virtual data engineers that help teams design, build, and manage data pipelines at unmatched speed.
Join #TeamGreen, where the mission comes first, collaboration drives us forward, and everyone pulls in the same direction to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves.

Role Purpose

At Matillion, we are moving beyond traditional data processing to define the future of the AI Data Automation Platform. Our mission is to make data "AI-ready" at the speed of thought, centred around Maia — our autonomous AI data engineering foundation.

The Senior Staff Engineer is a high-leverage technical leader responsible for driving architectural and engineering excellence across our Hub and Billing ecosystem. The Hub is where Maia Foundation's user management, roles, permissions, authorisation is harnessed, visualised, and controlled. This role is the technical authority also responsible for ensuring our Billing stack is as sophisticated and performant as the AI it commands.

This role partners with the Senior Staff community to lead organisational "big bets" — including the evolution of our Billing System, the evolution of our roles and permissions model, and ensuring our platform performs at a global scale. It sits at the intersection of technical craft, product vision, and organisational influence.

What will you be doing?

Design and Architecture

  • Lead the Hub and Billing architectural vision for Matillion's Maia foundation platform, defining scalable patterns, standards, and practices across multiple product squads

  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to translate high-level technical roadmaps into Hub and Billing features the help with Maia foundation platform's evolution

  • Define and evolve the architecture, ensuring modularity, scalability, and consistency across independently deployed product surfaces

  • Own the Hub and Billing features — driving customer adoption, contribution to standards, and long-term evolution to ensure consistency at scale

  • Lead technical design reviews, prototype emerging frontend patterns, and validate architectural proposals before full-scale development

  • Codebase Ownership

  • Hold final say on architectural decisions that balance innovation velocity with long-term maintainability

  • Identify and prioritise refactoring targets that will deliver the greatest efficiency and quality gains across the codebase

  • Ensure all third-party libraries are appropriately licensed, maintained, and fit for purpose

  • Define and maintain frontend observability practices — using monitoring data as a foundation for proactive stability improvements

  • Development

  • Champion an agentic development culture — actively integrating AI tools into daily engineering workflows and setting the standard for others to follow

  • Stay ahead of the rapidly evolving GenAI landscape, evaluating new tools, models, and approaches and feeding insights back into the team's ways of working

  • Build modular, reusable frontend components designed to be shared across Matillion's product range

  • Collaborate with Data Science and Product teams to ensure AI-driven features are surfaced through interfaces that are intuitive, performant, and reliable

  • Technical Mentorship

  • Develop engineering capability across squads through coaching, delegation, and structured feedback

  • Encourage technical curiosity and participation in architectural discussions at all levels

  • Advise on both on-the-job and external development opportunities

  • Model and embed Matillion's engineering values through everyday actions and behaviours

  • What are we looking for

    Technical/Role Specific

  • Expert-level proficiency in Java frameworks like springboot, with deep understanding of component architecture, state management concepts, event-driven architectures, test strategies and performance optimisation at scale

  • Deep knowledge developing and ensuring frontend security

  • Proficient with agile methodologies, driving efficient and rapid delivery to production

  • Proven ability to lead the design and delivery of significant frontend projects within a SaaS product environment

  • Strong experience designing frontend systems that are modular, testable, and capable of supporting complex, AI-driven user workflows

  • Deep proficiency in agentic development — an established workflow where AI agents are integrated into daily engineering practice to multiply output and quality

  • Experience leading cross-team strategic efforts and influencing organisational decisions to achieve alignment on major technical goals

  • Proficiency in diagnosing issues across related domains and fostering a culture where teams use monitoring data as a basis for stability improvements

  • Essential

  • Proven track record of managing complex Java codebases at scale

  • Experience with observability tooling and cross-domain debugging

  • Solid understanding of the cloud data landscape (Snowflake, Databricks, etc.) and how users interact with data automation platforms

  • Personal Capabilities

  • Strategic thinker — able to zoom out to the organisational level while remaining hands-on when needed

  • Collaborative relationship builder — builds strong relationships with engineers, managers, and product counterparts

  • Agentic-first mindset — actively champions AI tool adoption and sets the standard for others

  • Economically minded — makes trade-off decisions that balance long-term maintainability with delivery velocity

Where to Advertise Data Engineering Jobs in the UK (2026 Guide)

Advertising data engineering jobs in the UK requires a different approach to most technical hiring. Data engineers occupy a distinct discipline that sits between software engineering, data science and cloud infrastructure — and the strongest candidates identify firmly with the data engineering community rather than with adjacent roles. General job boards consistently conflate data engineering with data analysis, data science and BI development, producing high application volumes but low candidate quality for specialist pipeline and platform roles. This guide, published by DataEngineeringJobs.co.uk, covers where to advertise data engineering roles in the UK in 2026, how the main platforms compare, what employers should expect to pay, and what the data says about hiring across different role types.

Data Engineering Jobs UK 2026: What to Expect Over the Next 3 Years

Data engineering has become one of the most strategically important disciplines in the entire technology sector — and one of the most reliably in-demand. Every organisation that wants to use data to make decisions, train AI models, personalise products, manage risk, or understand its customers depends on data engineers to build the infrastructure that makes any of that possible. Without well-designed, reliable data pipelines, the most sophisticated machine learning model is worthless and the most ambitious analytics strategy is undeliverable. That foundational importance has made data engineering hiring remarkably resilient through the technology market corrections of the past few years. Where headcount reductions fell heavily on some engineering disciplines, demand for data engineers held firm — because the work of building and maintaining data infrastructure cannot be deferred in the way that some product development can. The data keeps coming. The pipelines need to work. But the data engineering jobs market of 2026 is not simply a stable version of what it was three years ago. The discipline has undergone a series of architectural shifts — from batch to streaming, from on-premise data warehouses to cloud-native lakehouses, from hand-rolled pipelines to declarative transformation frameworks, and most recently toward AI-augmented data engineering workflows that are beginning to reshape what the role looks like in practice. The employers hiring data engineers today are asking for a meaningfully different skill set than those hiring three years ago. The candidates who will thrive over the next three years are those who understand where the discipline is heading — which architectural patterns are becoming standard, which technologies are defining the modern data stack, and how the definition of a data engineering career is evolving toward a richer intersection of infrastructure, analytics, and AI enablement. This article breaks down what the UK data engineering jobs market is likely to look like through to 2028 — covering the titles emerging right now, the technologies driving employer demand, the skills that will matter most, and how to position your career ahead of the curve.

New Data Engineering Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Driving the Data Revolution

Data engineering is at the heart of the digital economy, transforming raw data into actionable insights, powering analytics, AI systems, and cloud infrastructure. As the UK and global markets continue to invest heavily in data platforms, pipelines, and real-time analytics, demand for skilled data engineers is growing rapidly. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.DataEngineeringJobs.co.uk , the critical question is: which companies are expanding, hiring, and shaping the future of data-driven business? This article highlights new data engineering employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, scale-ups, and international firms expanding in the UK.
